How to advertise on Google Gemini in 2026: where the ads actually run

The Gemini app sells no ads. Gemini-powered ads run in AI Overviews and AI Mode, bought through Google Ads. Here is how to get in, and what it costs.

You can't buy an ad inside the Gemini app. As of September 27, 2026, the app shows none, and Google sells no placement in it. To advertise on Google Gemini in practice means buying the Gemini-powered ads in Google Search, the ones that appear inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. They run from an ordinary Google Ads account, through Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, at ordinary auction prices.

"There are no ads in the Gemini app and there are no current plans to change that," Dan Taylor, Google's vice president of global ads, wrote on X on December 8, 2025. He was answering an Adweek report that said the opposite. Nine months later the app has 950 million monthly users and still carries no ads.

The Gemini app has zero ads, and Google keeps saying so

Google has been asked about Gemini app ads at least four times since December 2025. The answers have moved, slowly.

The direction runs from "no plans" to "not yet." Nobody at Google has given a date, and Adweek's 2026 launch has three months left to come true. Hassabis tied the caution to trust at Davos: ads mixed into personal recommendations can undermine the assistant people are asked to rely on.

Where Gemini-powered ads run today

Google Search runs two AI surfaces on Gemini models, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Both carry ads. Neither can be bought on its own.

Three surfaces run on Gemini. The app carries no ads. AI Overviews and AI Mode do.

AI Overview ads run on mobile and desktop in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and the US, in English, per Google's help page. The 11 markets outside the US were added on December 19, 2025. An ad shows only when it matches both the query and the content of the overview.

AI Mode is the conversational tab, and in the US it has carried ads since Google began testing them in 2025. SE Ranking checked 50,032 commercial keywords on June 30, 2026 and found text ads on 29.45% of them. In 71.1% of those cases two ads appeared together, so expect to share the slot with one competitor. Google has not announced AI Mode ads anywhere outside the US.

How to advertise on Google Gemini, step by step

No campaign type is called Gemini, and no checkbox puts you in AI Overviews. Eligibility comes from six settings you already control.

Six settings you already control decide whether your ads reach AI Overviews and AI Mode.

1. Check your country and your category

Ads in AI Overviews run only in the 12 markets above, and only in English. Google's help page also excludes "sensitive verticals like adult, alcohol, gambling, finance, healthcare, politics, and more." If you sell in one of those, AI Overviews stay closed however much you bid.

2. Run Search, Shopping or Performance Max

Google names those three campaign types as the source of the text and Shopping ads that appear in AI Overviews. Nothing else is listed. An account built on Display or YouTube alone has no route in.

3. Loosen your matching

Google asks for broad match on Search or AI Max, its keywordless matching. AI Max itself is optional: Ginny Marvin, Google's Ads Liaison, clarified in June 2026 that advertisers don't need it switched on to appear in AI search experiences. On September 4 she confirmed "a small experiment that recently kicked off," letting exact and phrase match keywords serve text ads in AI Mode on queries with explicit, direct intent.

Check your account this month either way. Google stopped accepting new campaign-level broad match settings on August 3, 2026. It is moving the existing ones, along with automatically created assets, into AI Max between September 1 and 30, per Search Engine Land. Dynamic Search Ads follow in February 2027.

4. Give the model something to quote

In the new formats Gemini writes the ad at the moment of the query, and Business Agent for Leads is trained on your website. Thin pages produce thin ads. Point final URLs at specific pages with prices, specs and answers written out, give each headline a different selling point, and fill every Merchant Center attribute if you run Shopping.

5. Bid on conversions you can verify

Broad match is built to run with Smart Bidding, and Smart Bidding is only as good as the conversions you feed it. Import real conversions, not page views. Tag every final URL with UTM parameters as well, so you can check the traffic in your own GA4 instead of trusting one attribution model.

6. Fence the spend

Add brand exclusions, a negative keyword list and a separate test budget before you switch anything on. Mike Ryan of Smarter Ecommerce found one account where competitor brand terms took 69% of Search impressions under AI Max. In another, Search Partner traffic converted at 0.07% against 3.04% on Google Search itself.

The four formats Google announced in May

Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026 added four ad formats built with Gemini. All four are US only, and none is generally available yet.

Direct Offers runs alongside them. It began as a pilot in January 2026 and puts a brand's discount or bundle into the AI Mode answer, with native checkout for merchants on Google's Universal Commerce Protocol. It opened as a partner program, not an auction. On the July 22 earnings call Schindler named IHG Hotels & Resorts as a partner and said sponsored links inside list responses were "showing early user traction."

What advertisers who ran it report

Google's number first. Schindler told investors on July 22 that half a million advertisers had adopted AI Max. Advertisers on AI Max or Performance Max, he said, "see an average of 15% more conversions or value on Search at a similar ROAS."

Independent numbers are less tidy. Mike Ryan, head of ecommerce insights at Smarter Ecommerce, studied more than 250 campaigns and found a median revenue lift of 13% alongside a median CPA increase of 16%. ROAS landed anywhere from +42% to -35%. Up to 63% of AI Max matches recycled queries the existing keywords already covered. "Turning on AI Max is essentially a coin toss: you may see a lift, but efficiency likely won't follow," Ryan said.

Price is the other finding. SE Ranking saw ads more often where clicks cost more: on 24.33% of keywords under $2 CPC, 32.45% between $2 and $10, and 53.56% above $10. Cheap keywords were the least likely to carry an ad at all.

Share of US commercial keywords with text ads in AI Mode, by CPC band. SE Ranking, 50,032 keywords, June 30, 2026.

Buying the ad does not buy the answer. Only 11.53% of the domains advertising in AI Mode appeared among the sources AI Mode cited, and 2.32% of advertised URLs ranked organically for the same keyword.

None of this shows up in your own account. Google's help page is blunt about it: Google Ads "currently doesn't offer segmented reporting when ads show within Search AI Overviews." Those impressions are reported as top ads, and you can't opt out of serving there. Google's Ads Liaison has said AI Mode ads are reported the same way.

Crypto and finance brands get one door, not two

Google's AI Overviews page excludes finance outright. It has published no matching list for AI Mode, and SE Ranking counted 231 finance advertisers and 1,952 finance ad appearances in US AI Mode on June 30. Our reading: a licensed crypto exchange, certified under Google's crypto policy, can reach US AI Mode and nothing else Gemini touches.

Certification is the hard part. Google lets exchanges and wallets advertise only in approved jurisdictions, with a license it recognizes. Without that certification, ads for token sales, DeFi trading protocols and buying or trading crypto are not allowed. Our breakdown of the Google Ads crypto policy lists the licenses that count, including the August 2026 update that added Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway for MiCA-licensed providers.

An unlicensed token, a DeFi protocol or a presale has no path into any Gemini surface. Those projects buy placements on crypto publications, directly or through crypto ad networks. We run one. PraxAds sells banner placements on crypto sites we review by hand and takes deposits in USDT or USDC. Every click carries UTM parameters, so you can check it in your own GA4.

The free route is getting cited by Gemini

The Gemini app carries no ads, but it names brands in its answers every day, and that part is open to everyone. BrightEdge found in April 2026 that Gemini's citations overlap only 27% with Google AI Mode's and 34% with AI Overviews'. About 26% of Gemini citations came from government, academic and institutional sources, and user-generated content made up 0.2%.

That points to a short routine. Publish pages that state facts with numbers and dates, because Gemini cites sources that read like reference material. Earn mentions from trade bodies and institutional sources in your category, since forum threads barely register. And ask Gemini about your brand once a month, then write down what it says. The app is the one Gemini surface you can't pay your way into.

Where this leaves your budget

If you already run Search, Shopping or Performance Max with broad match in one of the 12 markets, you are probably buying Gemini-powered placements today and can't see which ones. Give it a separate budget, read the search terms weekly, and judge it on conversions you measure yourself. Anyone selling a Gemini app ad package right now is selling something Google does not offer.

Google has said "not yet" four times. We'll update this page when it says a date.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Gemini show ads?

Not in the Gemini app. As of September 2026 the app, with 950 million monthly users, carries no ads, and Google says it has no current plans to change that. Gemini-powered ads do run in Google Search: inside AI Overviews in 12 English-language markets and inside AI Mode in the US.

When will ads come to the Gemini app?

Google has not given a date. Adweek reported in December 2025 that advertisers were told 2026, and Google denied it. On its April 2026 earnings call, Google said it was considering app ads but would test in AI Mode first. Treat any vendor selling Gemini app placements today with suspicion.

How much does it cost to advertise on Gemini?

The same as any Google Search ad. Ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode run through the normal Google Ads auction, with no separate rate card or minimum spend. AI Mode ads cluster on expensive keywords: SE Ranking found ads on 53.56% of keywords above $10 CPC, against 24.33% of keywords under $2.

Do I need AI Max to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode?

No. Broad match Search campaigns, Shopping and Performance Max are all eligible, and Google's Ads Liaison confirmed in June 2026 that AI Max is optional. The four new AI Mode formats announced in May 2026 are built on AI Max, though, and Google is moving campaign-level broad match settings into AI Max during September 2026.

Can I see how my ads perform in AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Not separately. Google reports those impressions as top ads and offers no AI segment, and it does not let you opt out of AI Overviews. The closest proxy we know of is the search terms report: long, question-shaped queries are the ones most likely to have come through an AI answer.

Can crypto companies advertise in Gemini-powered answers?

Only licensed ones, and in practice only in US AI Mode. Google excludes finance from AI Overview ads, and any crypto exchange or wallet ad needs Google's crypto certification, which requires a recognized license. Unlicensed tokens, presales and DeFi protocols can't run on any Gemini surface and usually buy placements on crypto publications instead.

Methodology

Facts about Google's products were read from Google's own help pages, blog and earnings call transcripts on September 26 and 27, 2026. Third-party figures come from SE Ranking (50,032 US commercial keywords, collected June 30, 2026), Smarter Ecommerce (250+ campaigns, reported March 2026) and BrightEdge (April 2026). Not included: vendor claims about Gemini app placements, which Google does not sell, and performance data for the four formats announced in May 2026, which no independent source has published yet. The chart plots SE Ranking's three CPC bands as printed.
